Hints and Tips

Making your CV stand out

  • Always use a clean typeface - never smaller than 12 point

  • Keep it short and sweet - two pages at the most

  • Check for spelling mistakes (and coffee stains!)

  • Get it in on time

  • Follow instructions - if the ad asked for two copies of your CV, send them!

  • Don't attach extra documents

  • Remember to put your name, address and contact details at the top

Content

  • Start with a one-paragraph summary of your strengths and experience

  • Then put your career history in reverse: current job first

  • Go into more detail for your current job: job title, years in the role, key tasks, responsibilities and achievements

  • Keep details shorter for earlier positions

  • Follow your employment history with educational qualifications, personal details, interests and references
