AXA's road safety survey results

A major European Road Behaviour Survey analysing 9 countries was undertaken by AXA Insurance. The study involved interviews with 800 drivers in Ireland and other countries from Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. The survey examined driver’s responses to key questions on road safety and driving behaviours in general.

The survey showed that 92% of Irish drivers find drink driving dangerous, ranking the highest versus an EU average of 78%. This survey also showed 8 out of 10 Irish drivers feel safer on our roads and 1/3 think that their driving behaviour has improved in the last 2 years.

The main reasons why there were such improvement in car driving behavior according to those surveyed:

  • The road safety campaigns were well understood and had a positive impact

  • The increased law enforcement has made drivers more cautious of respecting the limitations

On a less positive note, 1 in 10 admitted to having fallen asleep while driving. (RTE). Noel Brett of the Road Safety Authority (RSA) said driver fatigue is as dangerous as drink-driving.

With a database going back to PMPA we have looked at the most common causes of accidents. From this wealth of information we have devised an interactive programme covering what we consider to be the most common causes of accidents.
