Will NCT delays affect my car insurance policy and cover?

Many motorists are affected by NCT delays at the moment, resulting in them driving without a valid NCT cert and disc. These NCT delays are caused due to the lasting effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, staff and qualified mechanic shortages and customers cancelling appointments which results in them being cycled back into the booking process and priority list.

Will my car insurance be affected if my NCT is overdue?

Insurance Ireland and NCT have issued information detailing that because of the current circumstances that are leading to NCT delays, car insurance companies will recognise that some overdue NCTs are not the customer’s fault. However, motorists are still required to maintain their vehicles to a roadworthy condition and make every effort to book an appointment for their NCT. One key tip is to ensure that you always have proof that you have an NCT appointment booked so that you can show it in the event that you are stopped by the Gardaí or if you need to make an insurance claim.

Don’t delay booking your NCT, put yourself on the priority list today if you can’t find an appointment that’s early enough.

How to book an NCT appointment

You can book your NCT online through the NCT website. However, if you need an earlier appointment than the one that’s being given to you online, you can call the NCT team on 01 413 5992 or go to their website and add your vehicle to the priority list - an option for this can be found on the booking application form. Once you’re added to the priority list you should be given an appointment within 4 weeks.

Get your car serviced before your NCT

Another key reason for the backlog of NCTs is the result of vehicles failing the test and needing to be cycled back into the booking process.

Many people use the NCT as a diagnostic test, but it’s extremely important to get your vehicle serviced in advance of your NCT. Getting your car serviced before your NCT will ensure that any problems with your vehicle are fixed and it should pass the NCT.

This will clear up vehicles needing a re-test and should speed up the backlog and process for other motorists.

Check out our guide on what you need for the NCT. It details how to prepare your car for the NCT to ensure your car has the best chance of passing.
