What type of licence do I need to ride a motorcycle? More

Do I have to attend a Rider Skills Assessment Programme in order to get motorbike insurance? More
You may have to complete a Skills Assessment and obtain a grading if you intend to insure certain motorcycles.
AXA provide a Motorbike Skills Assessment Programme administered by Approved Driving Instructors. For further information please see the Motorcycle insurance documents.
Will I get a discount from my premium if I complete a Rider Skills Assessment Programme? More

Do I have to complete a Training Course (IBT) in order to apply for the Driving Test? More
Since 2010 the Initial Basic Training Course (IBT) must be completed by any first time motorcycle licence holder. If it is required, you cannot sit a Motorcycle Driving Test unless you have completed an IBT. This is a training course that teaches basic riding skills to learner motorcyclists and is a 16 hour course broken into four separate modules to be completed in sequence. These modules are a mixture of theory and practical riding skills. You will find further details of IBT on the Road Safety Authority website: www.rsa.ie
Will AXA provide cover if I hold a learner permit and have not completed the IBT? More
If you hold a learner permit and are required to complete the Initial Basic Training Course (IBT) we will not provide cover until it is completed.
Can I carry a pillion passenger if I hold a Learner Permit? More
No. If you hold a Learner Permit you are not permitted by law to carry a pillion passenger.
If I hold a full UK motorcycle licence, can I arrange bike insurance with AXA? More
Providing the licence entitles you to ride the motorcycle you wish to insure, we will accept a full UK motorcycle licence. You will be required to provide the original licence as evidence along with the accompanying counterpart document which will contain details of any driving convictions.
If I hold a full EU licence issued outside Ireland can I arrange insurance with AXA? More
Providing the licence entitles you to ride the motorcycle you wish to insure, we will accept a full EU motorcycle licence. You will be required to provide the original licence as evidence.
Who will be covered to drive my motorcycle? More
Only those drivers who are named on the certificate of insurance are covered. You should check your certificate carefully to ensure it meets your requirements and contact us immediately if you have any queries.
What type of use is covered on the policy? More
Our policy covers social, domestic and pleasure purposes. If you require use for business purposes or courier or fast food delivery use, you should contact us.
Do I get a discount if my motorcycle is restricted? More
Discounted rates are available for factory restricted motorcycles only.
Does AXA provide cover for classic motorcycles? More
Yes - on a “market value” basis. In the event of a claim for total loss or theft the maximum payable is the market value of the motorcycle at the time of the loss or theft rather than a value at the inception of the policy.
